This regional history museum highlights the growth of the city from the ninth century to current times. One of the more interesting exhibits is on the rise of Hamburg as a shipping powerhouse between the mid 17th and mid 19th centuries. The museum houses a very acceptable café-cum-wine bar with courtyard, through which the Special Exhibition can be reached. Recent exhibitions have included "History of Landscape Gardening, the extremely popular "Hamburg Sound," and "Glass Culture from Northern Germany."
